MARY OLIVIER Obituary

Mary Olivier, 96, formerly of Leominster, died Saturday, December 9, 2023, at Seacoast Nursing and Rehabilitation Center in Gloucester, Massachusetts.

She was born April 28, 1927, in Lynn, MA, and was the daughter of Walter and Lillian Rogers Wadden. Mary graduated from St. Mary’s High School in Lynn and earned a bachelor’s degree from Emmanuel College in Boston where she majored in chemistry. Soon after, she met her husband, Guy Olivier, at the General Electric plant in Lynn, and, upon his transfer to the Fitchburg facility, they moved to Leominster where she resided for over 65 years.

Mary was an active member of the Leominster community. She was a Brownie troop leader and served alternately on the school committee and town planning board. Mary had a strong interest in politics and worked on a number of political campaigns in addition to her participation in the League of Women Voters.

An active parishioner at St. Leo’s Church, she taught Christian Doctrine classes and served as a Eucharistic minister. Her strong faith in her religion was always evident and brought comfort to herself and others.

Mary grew up by the beach and loved her family’s camp in Gloucester. She enjoyed traveling, as well as a variety of outdoor activities such as skiing, tennis, gardening, and hiking. Mary was a talented knitter and sewer. She was an avid reader and enjoyed the challenges of daily crossword puzzles.

Mary’s greatest love was her family. She was the wife of the late Guy R. Olivier for 50 years before his passing on May 18, 2002, and the devoted mother of seven children whom she leaves behind: Jeanne Olivier of Boston, Mary Lou Emanuele and Barbara Mancini, both of Winthrop, Elizabeth Olivier of Cumberland, Maine, Karen Prewitt of Gloucester, Susan Olivier of Lynn, and Richard Olivier of Leominster. She is also survived by ten grandchildren, two great-grandchildren, her brother Walter Wadden, her sister, Alice Caunter, and many nieces and nephews. Mary’s twin sister, Frances Schoch, predeceased her in March of 2019.

The family would like to acknowledge the love and care Mary received at Seacoast Nursing and Rehabilitation Center, especially from the nurses, aides, and caseworkers.

Funeral arrangements are under the direction of THE CURLEY MARCHAND FUNERAL HOME, 89 West St., Leominster, MA. A private mass will be held at St. Leo’s Church in Leominster followed by burial at St. Leo’s Cemetery.
