Jerry Carroll Obituary

Jerry Lloyd Carroll (June 16, 1935 - March 15, 2025)

It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of Jerry Lloyd Carroll, 89, who left us peacefully, surrounded by his loving family. Born in Crocker, Missouri in 1935, Jerry spent part of his childhood in St. Louis, MO, before returning to his small town, Crocker, for his high school years. Jerry was the known prankster in his class and when he, along with his two daughters, visited Crocker in October 2024, his high school buddies and family were still laughing at his antics.

After high school, Jerry was drafted into the Army, serving in the Special Security Agency, stationed in Alaska and finally Fort Devens, MA, where he stayed and opened his first business, an appliance sales and repair shop. Soon after, he met the love of his life, Sue, when fate brought them together at separate events at the Groton Inn. After that initial encounter, Jerry had to do some detective work to find the phone number of the beautiful girl he had met.  When he finally found her, he persuaded her to go on a date with him that included watching the newest thing - color tv - at his appliance store.

Jerry and Sue married in 1963, celebrating a wonderful 60 years together before Sue's passing in December 2023. As a steadfast entrepreneur, Jerry successfully ran Refrigerated Air in Leominster and the Jennison Company in Fitchburg, retiring in the early 2000s. His children fondly remember him visiting their high school to repair heating systems, always taking a moment to share a warm hug.

In his later years, Jerry and Sue moved to Shrewsbury, MA, where they were doting grandparents and fixtures in the community. When his beloved Sue’s health began to fail, Jerry dedicated himself to caring for her, while also lending his mechanical expertise to anyone in need. Even well into his 80s, he was known for repairing his own car and traveling to assist his children with any mechanical issues they encountered.

Jerry had a great sense of humor, was always quick to laugh and could spin a tale tall like no one else. Behind all the jokes, though, he was a deeply caring, kind man who was always willing to lend a helping hand. More than anything, he loved his family wholeheartedly, and recently said that his children and grandchildren were his proudest accomplishment.

He is survived by his daughter, Erin Carroll, and her husband, Richard Fitzhenry of Hyde Park, VT; his son, Patrick, and his wife, Anita (Schoenig) Carroll of Shrewsbury, MA, along with their children, Kathryn, Jameson, and Riley; his son, Brian Carroll, and his wife, Tina Nunez of Santa Maria, CA, and their children Aidan, Sarah, and Seamus; and his daughter, Shannon Carroll and her partner Tim Mitteness of Providence, RI. Jerry also leaves behind many cherished nephews and nieces across Massachusetts and Missouri, all of whom loved him dearly. He is predeceased by his parents, Harrison and Opal (Abbott) Carroll (later Shelton), his brothers Virgil and Clarence, and his sisters Frances, Zee, Imogene, and Jeannette.

Jerry’s family would like to extend their heartfelt gratitude to the caregivers at Dana Farber Cancer Institute in Boston, particularly Dr. Philippe Armand, for giving us an additional ten precious years with him. We also thank VNA Hospice and Rose Monahan Hospice Center for the compassionate care they provided during Jerry's final weeks.

Jerry Lloyd Carroll will be deeply missed, but his spirit will forever live on in the hearts of those who knew and loved him.
